Blood pressure chart (adults, 2025 AHA/ACC guideline)
| Category | Top number (systolic) | Bottom number (diastolic) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Less than 120 | and | Less than 80 |
| Elevated | 120 to 129 | and | Less than 80 |
| High blood pressure, stage 1 | 130 to 139 | or | 80 to 89 |
| High blood pressure, stage 2 | 140 or higher | or | 90 or higher |
| Severe high blood pressure | Higher than 180 | and/or | Higher than 120 |
Numbers are in mm Hg. Your doctor decides what your numbers mean for you, based on your full health picture. If your reading is higher than 180/120, wait a few minutes and measure again. If it stays that high, contact your health care professional. If you also have chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, vision changes or trouble speaking, call 911.
How to take an accurate reading at home
- For 30 minutes before: no smoking, caffeine, alcohol or exercise.
- Use a validated upper-arm monitor with the right cuff size, and empty your bladder first.
- Sit quietly for at least 5 minutes, back supported, feet flat on the floor, legs uncrossed. Don't talk.
- Rest your arm on a table at heart level, with the cuff on bare skin just above the elbow.
- Take at least two readings, one minute apart, and write them all down.
- Measure at the same times each day, for example morning (before medication, food and coffee) and evening.
